HB Draw out of Singleback Trips Close is a delayed run concept designed to bait a pass rush upfield before the HB takes the handoff on a delayed track behind a pass-blocking front. The offensive line sells pass protection for a beat, then releases into run blocks at the second level to open a lane for the back, making this an ideal counter to aggressive interior blitzes and overzealous edge rushers. There is no route progression since this is a pure run play, so the primary read is patience: let the blocking develop, identify the first crease off the double team at the point of attack, and press it before cutting off the puller or climbing linebacker.
Pre-snap, check for stacked linebackers at depth or a defense showing run blitz with safeties creeping into the box, since immediate fills at the mesh point erase the delay before it develops. Look for Cover 3 Sky or Cover 1 Man alignments where linebackers are reading pass first and flowing with route concepts, since these shells are most vulnerable to the delayed handoff hitting the vacated interior. Post-snap, track the middle linebacker and any user-controlled defender spying the backfield, since a disciplined mike who sits and reads the draw will blow up the timing before the back reaches the line. Watch for delayed blitzes or contain rushers who peel back inside, as these disguised pressures often collapse the draw lane the same way they would sack a quarterback on a real drop. Defenses that consistently show all out pressure or nano blitz packages from the edges will not respect the play fake and can string the run out before the blocking wall forms, so avoid this call against known blitz heavy opponents.
Call this play right after a string of dropback passes from Trips Close like Slants or Stick to condition the defense into rushing hard upfield, then punish that aggression with the delayed handoff. Use it on early downs, especially 1st and 10 or 2nd and short, when the defense has shown Cover 3 or man coverage with off ball linebackers flowing hard to previous pass plays. Avoid calling HB Draw against defenses sitting in a two high shell with linebackers stacked tight to the line, since those fronts fill gaps immediately and kill the delayed timing. Manually take control of a lead blocking TE or fullback if available to seal the alley defender, since the CPU AI blocker will not always finish the block on the second level. Pair this with HB Duo and HB Stretch in your play-calling sequence so the defense cannot key run fits based on formation tendency alone, forcing them to respect multiple run angles from the same personnel.
