Inside Cross is a man beater built around a deep crossing route that attacks the middle of the field from the trips side, paired with an intermediate crosser working underneath from the opposite side to create a natural rub and pick against man defenders. The backside receiver runs a comeback or dig to hold single coverage honest while the running back stays in as a check release option against blitz. Blocking is a standard five man protection with the RB scanning for pressure before releasing, and the primary read progression goes deep cross first, then work back to the underneath crosser sitting in the void, then check down to the back if both are covered.
Pre-snap, check for two deep safeties versus a single high safety look, since a single high shell means more risk on the deep cross but also more space underneath if the defense drops into Cover 3. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they sink hard and try to wall off the crossing routes with zone drops, that signals Cover 3 or Cover 4 match and you should target the shallow crosser in the void behind them. Man coverage tells include corners lined up tight on the trips receivers with no cushion and a linebacker shaded toward the crossing routes anticipating the rub, which is when the deep cross wins most consistently. Beware of a user controlled defender sitting in the middle of the field as a lurk threat, since a smart Mike linebacker or free safety can rob the crossing routes if they read your eyes, so look him off before delivering the throw. This play struggles against disguised blitzes that bring extra rushers off the edge since the deep developing routes need time, so if you see a heavy pressure look with only five in coverage, be ready to check down immediately or throw hot before the crossers even develop.
Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing man or zone by checking safety depth and corner alignment on the trips side. If you see man coverage with no safety help over the top, throw the deep cross with anticipation right off the break since the natural rub from the crossing routes will create separation. Against zone, especially Cover 3 or Cover 4, hot route the underneath crosser into a shallow drag or spot route to settle in the soft spot behind the linebackers instead of trying to force it deep. Use this play on second and medium to second and long, or on third and long when you need a chunk gain over the middle, since the crossers take time to develop and need a clean pocket. Pair this call with Slants or Stick earlier in a series to condition the defense to expect quick underneath throws, then hit Inside Cross to hit the same crossing window but deeper and with bigger explosive play upside. If the defense starts jumping the crossers with a user controlled linebacker or safety, sequence in HB Draw or HB Duo to keep the defense honest and slow down their pursuit to the crossing routes.
