Mtn PA Boot Insert is a play-action rollout out of Singleback Trips Close that sells the run fake before the quarterback booms out to the boundary. The insert route from the tight end sits in the shallow to intermediate window as the safety valve while the mountain (deep crossing) route from the trips side stretches the field horizontally against pursuing linebackers. This is a play-action man beater that also punishes zone defenses that bite on the run fake, and the primary read progression starts with the insert crosser underneath, then works to the mountain route working across the field, with the rollout action giving you a checkdown or scramble option if both are covered.
Read the strong safety pre-snap. If he is creeping down into the box, that is a run key bite and the insert route will be wide open in the flat area he vacates. Watch for Tampa 2 or Cover 3 shells with linebackers sinking hard to intermediate zones, this can clog the insert crosser and force you to the mountain route on the far side. Identify man coverage by corner alignment on the trips side. If corners are pressed and turned to run with receivers, the mountain route creates natural separation working away from their leverage. Post-snap, key the flow of the linebackers. Overpursuit toward the run fake opens the insert route immediately, while disciplined linebackers who stay home on play-action will sit in the throwing lane and bait a pick. Beware of a contain defender or spy on the edge the rollout side. A user-controlled defender staying home on the boot can force an early checkdown or a rushed throw into pressure.
Run this on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and short to medium) when you have already established the ground game so linebackers respect the run fake and bite on the mesh point action.
Check the middle linebacker and strong safety depth before the snap. If they are stacked tight to the line expecting run, this play has a high hit rate on the insert route in the flat.
Use the rollout to your advantage against aggressive edge rushers. If the defense shows a wide nine or edge blitz look, the boot action naturally moves the quarterback away from that pressure.
Sequence this with Mtn Insert Zone Wk and HB Duo earlier in a series so the defense keys run to the strong side, then hit this boot play off the same look to counter linebacker overpursuit.
If the corner on the mountain route side is playing off man coverage, hot route the insert tight end to sit down in the void instead of crossing all the way, giving you a quicker access throw against a blitz.
