Stick out of Singleback Trips Close is a quick-game zone beater built off the classic stick concept, using the trips side to create a natural triangle read with a flat route, a stick (settle) route, and a corner or vertical breaking route stacked outside. The backside typically runs a dig or in-cut from the TE, giving the quarterback a two way go if the trips concept gets clogged. Primary progression starts with the outside vertical to hold the deep defender, works down to the stick sitting in the void underneath, then checks to the flat as the low man in the triangle before resetting to the backside in-cut against zone drops.
Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if the middle linebacker sinks into the stick window too quickly the quarterback should reset to the flat or backside dig. Identify Cover 3 sky or buzz rotations by tracking the flat defender, a slow rotating corner or safety to the flat leaves the stick route wide open in the seam. Look for man coverage indicators such as corners aligned tight with no safety help, this signals a potential blitz look and the quarterback should prioritize the quick flat or hot routed shallow drag. Beware of nano blitzes or overload pressure from the trips side, if the offensive line cannot account for an extra rusher the quarterback needs to get the ball out immediately on the stick or flat. Against Cover 2 with two deep safeties sitting on top, the stick route in the intermediate hole is the highest value read since the corner defender is stretched by the vertical and flat combo.
Diagnose the coverage shell before the snap by checking safety depth, if you see two high safeties stay wide this is a green light for the stick sitting in the hole against Cover 2 or Cover 4 zone drops.
Use the flat route as your answer against Cover 3 sky or cloud coverage since the corner and flat defender get stressed by the same triangle read.
Hot route the backside TE into a shallow drag or spot if you are facing man coverage with no safety help over the top, this gives you a rhythm throw versus Cover 0 or Cover 1 blitzes.
Pair this play with Slants and Inside Cross in your play calling sequence to attack both quick underneath zones and man coverage without changing your formation tendencies.
Call this on second and short to medium third down since the stick sitting route consistently finds the sticks against off man and zone drops.
