Breakdown

HB Duo out of Singleback Trips Close is a downhill gap run designed to double team the interior defensive linemen at the point of attack before a lead blocker climbs to the second level. The offensive line combo blocks down to seal one gap, allowing the fullback or backside guard to work up and take on a linebacker while the running back reads the double team. This is a run play, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, and the primary read is a one cut decision: press the double team, then bounce or bang based on which linebacker fills first.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify linebacker depth and alignment, stacked or blitzing linebackers over the play side gap can blow this up before the double team sets. Watch for a crashing defensive tackle or user controlled defensive lineman shooting the gap, since Duo blocking is slower to develop and vulnerable to fast penetration. Check safety alignment, a single high safety often means the box is loaded and Duo will have limited room, while two high safeties usually signal lighter fronts that this play can exploit. Post-snap, key the second level linebacker fit, if he stays patient and reads the double team correctly he can string the play out to the sideline. Nano blitzes or interior twists from the defensive line disrupt the double team timing and are one of the most effective ways to shut this run down.

Usage Tips

Use HB Duo on early downs when you want to establish tempo and set up play-action later from the same Trips Close look, especially PA Boot Lt or Mtn PA Boot Insert.

Check the box count before the snap, if the defense has six or more in the box against 11 personnel, consider audibling to HB Draw or Slants instead.

Let your running back press the double team mesh point patiently, do not bail early, since the blocking scheme needs a beat to develop before the crease opens.

Against aggressive linebacker blitzes, this play can gash defenses that shoot gaps too fast because the double team absorbs the initial penetration and creates a natural cutback lane.

Mix HB Duo with HB Stretch to keep linebackers honest, forcing them to respect both a downhill gap scheme and an outside zone track from the same personnel and formation.
