The primary read progression starts with the inside slant out of the trips bunch, works to the middle slant, and finishes to the outside slant, with the backside route as a checkdown against zone drops or if the trips side is jumped.
Check the safety alignment before the snap, since two deep safeties signal zone coverage and you should prioritize the backside route or hot route into a zone beater concept. Watch cornerback depth on the trips side, since press man alignment tells you the slants will win quickly off the rub while soft corners give the defense time to close throwing lanes. Identify if there is a lurking linebacker sitting in the shallow middle zone, since a user controlled defender flowing under the slants can jump the inside route and bait a turnover. Look for blitz packages showing five or six man pressure presnap, since the five man slide protection can get exposed by a nano blitz off the edge if you do not account for a hot defender. This play struggles against Cover 3 sky or Cover 4 match since the underneath defenders can sink and wall off the slant windows, so be ready to check down immediately if you see that shell postsnap.
Use presnap motion or a defender shift check to confirm man coverage before the snap since this concept thrives against Cover 1 and Cover 0 look. Hot route the backside receiver into a quick out or hitch if you diagnose zone coverage, since the natural slant spacing does not hold up as well against Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells. This play works best on second and short or third and short because the timing throw does not need much field to convert.
