Tight Y Off is Shotgun's RPO hub. You get 11 personnel with the tight end aligned off the ball just outside the tackle box, essentially a wing/H-back look, with two receivers split wide and one slot receiver. That off-ball alignment is the whole point: the Y is not covered up by the tackle, so he is a legal free releaser on every snap and can be motioned, wheeled, or hot routed without disturbing the offensive line's protection ID. Compared to tighter Shotgun sets that bury the tight end on the line, Tight Y Off keeps him eligible in space while still giving you an extra body near the box for Inside Zone, Duo, and 0 1 Trap.
The play art here is stacked with option concepts. RPO Zone Peek, RPO Peek Slant, RPO Alert Bubble, RPO Peek Slant Bubble, RPO Zone Alert Glance, RPO Zone Alert Omaha, RPO Zone Alert Bubble, and Cheat RPO Zone Alert Bubble give you a full menu of run/pass conflicts off the same Inside Zone action. Against single high with a defender walked into the box, you hand it. Against two high with a light box, the glance and slant reads open behind the linebacker's run fit. Layer in the jet package (Jet Pass Fk Zone, Jet Touch Pass, Zone Fake Jet, Fake Jet HB Seam) and you force the defense to honor horizontal stress before the ball is even snapped.
The passing game leans West Coast with a vertical kicker. Mesh Spot, Mtn Mesh Spot, Mesh Whips, Stick, and Choice Pivot Return are your rhythm answers versus man and cover 3. Deep Crossers, PA Slot Cross, PA Go Slot Cross, Switch WR Drag, and Cheat Slash Wheel Cross attack middle of field open looks. The 3DRB and SLWR tags matter: put a receiving back on the field and motion the Y away, and you can isolate that back on a linebacker on Wheel Spot or HB Slip Screen, which is one of the cleanest matchup wins available in 11 personnel.
Count the box before every RPO. Six or fewer defenders with the safety over the top means hand it off on Zone Peek. Seven plus with single high means take the glance or slant read behind the vacating linebacker.
Motion the slot receiver to confirm coverage. If a defender travels, live in Mesh Spot, Mesh Whips, and Switch WR Drag. If defenders bump and pass off, go to Stick, Choice Pivot Return, and Flood Drive to hit the zone voids.
On third and medium, Stick and Wheel Spot are your bread and butter. Hot route the back to a wheel out of Wheel Spot when you see a linebacker responsible for him, and you get a matchup win almost every rep.
Use the jet package to set up the counter. Run Jet Touch Pass or Zone Fake Jet twice, then come back with Fake Jet HB Seam or Mtn PA Spinner once the second level starts flowing with the motion.
In the red zone, go to TE Corner, Mtn Y-Corner, and Redzone Scissors. The off-ball Y alignment gives him a free release into the corner route, which is a near automatic score against man coverage with a size mismatch.
