Deep Crossers out of Shotgun Tight Y Off is a dual deep crosser concept designed to stress the middle of the field on both levels. Both outside receivers run deep crossing routes that cross each other near the numbers around 15 to 18 yards, while the TE runs a shallow drag underneath and the backside receiver from the bunch area runs a shorter in cut to occupy underdneath zone defenders. The HB releases into the boundary on a swing or wheel route to give the QB a check down and a leverage option against blitzes. This is primarily a man beater because the deep crossers create natural rubs and picks against man defenders trying to trail across the field, but it also stresses zone defenders who have to widen and pass off routes in the intermediate to deep middle. The primary read progression starts with the deep crosser to the side of the initial drop back, works to the opposite deep crosser if the first is covered, and checks down to the HB in the flat or the underneath drag as the shallow now/hot option.

Defensive Reads

Read the safeties pre-snap, if both are deep in a two high shell expect Cover 2 or Cover 4 which forces you to work the deep crossers underneath the safeties rather than trying to throw over the top. If you see one safety rotate down into the box pre-snap, that usually signals man coverage or Cover 3, both of which are vulnerable to the natural rub created by the crossing routes. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they sink hard to cover the drag route the middle of the field opens up for the deep crossers to work into soft zone. Identify any user controlled defender lurking in the shallow middle, since a smart user can jump the drag route or sit in the crossing lane and undercut both deep routes. This play struggles against a hard double robber look or a Cover 6 shell with a squat corner underneath, since both crossers can get bracketed if the defense sinks two defenders into the same passing lane.

Usage Tips

Use this play on second or third and long when you need a defense to declare man or zone before the snap since the double crossers exploit trailing defenders. Motion or shift the TE pre-snap to see if the defense adjusts, this reveals man coverage if a defender follows across the formation. Against zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4, hold the ball an extra beat and let the deep crossers work into the void created by the underneath drag route pulling linebackers. If you see a blitz look, get the ball out quickly to the HB swing or wheel route since it beats blitzes that leave the flat uncovered. Pair Deep Crossers with Mesh Spot or Stick earlier in a drive so the defense respects shallow crossing traffic, then hit them over the top with the deep crossers once they start jumping the short stuff. Use hard counts and freeze the defense with the drag route action before committing to the deep read.
