Deep Crossers out of Shotgun Tight Y Off lines up two receivers to the left, a tight end attached to the formation, and a running back releasing to the flat. Both outside receivers run deep crossing routes that stem to about 15 yards and cross the middle of the field at full speed, while the tight end runs a shallow drag underneath and the running back releases to the flat as a checkdown or hot route conversion. This is a man beater built on the crossers rubbing coverage and creating natural picks, with the primary read progression going from the deep crosser breaking open first, down to the underneath drag from the tight end, and finally to the running back in the flat as the outlet.
Defensive Reads
Read the safety alignment before the snap, single high safety usually signals man coverage underneath which is exactly what the deep crossers exploit. Watch for linebacker depth at the snap, if they sink into deep zones quickly this indicates zone coverage that can clog the crossing lanes. Key on user controlled defenders shadowing the outside receivers off the snap, an aggressive man bump technique on the crossers will slow their release and delay the big play window. Against Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells the crossers face natural traffic from zone defenders sitting in the middle of the field, so expect the tight end drag and running back flat route to be higher percentage answers. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge shorten the quarterback's window, so identify pre-snap blitz indicators like linebackers or safeties creeping toward the line and be ready to get the ball out quickly to the flat.
Usage Tips
Look for man coverage indicators pre-snap such as corners lined up tight on the outside receivers with no help over the top, since the crossers thrive against man leverage. Motion or shift the running back before the snap to confirm if the defense follows in man or stays put in zone. Use the deep crossers on third and long or in two minute situations where you need a big chunk play over the middle of the field. If the defense shows heavy underneath zone, hot route the tight end drag into a deeper option or check down early to the running back rather than forcing the crossers into traffic.
