This is a pure run play with no pass option attached, and the primary read is the HB reading the trap block and picking the cutback lane versus the frontside crease based on how the defensive line reacts to the pulling blocker.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify if the defensive tackle or edge defender is crashing hard inside, since that is exactly the trap sets up to exploit. Watch the Mike linebacker depth and shade, if he is sitting tight to the line expecting run he can beat the trap block with a quick downhill fill. Post-snap, key on whether the user-controlled defender flows outside with the tackle or stays home to spill the trap block back inside. Defenses with disciplined gap integrity and a linebacker reading the pulling guard will shut this down, while defenses that overload one side or blitz through unblocked gaps get gashed by the cutback. If the defense shows a heavy front with extra defenders stacked at the point of attack, expect the trap lane to be clogged and consider checking to a different concept in the set.
Usage Tips
Use this play on early downs, especially 1st and 10 or 2nd and short, when you want to establish tempo against base fronts. Check the box count pre-snap and only trigger the trap if the defense is showing 6 or fewer in the box with no extra run support crashing down. If the Mike linebacker is stacked directly over center with no shift, the trap block has a clean angle and you should trust the initial hole. Pair this with Inside Zone and Duo in the same set so defenses cannot key on a single blocking scheme, then mix in RPO Zone Peek or RPO Zone Alert Bubble off similar formation looks to keep linebackers honest. Against aggressive gap-shooting defenses, this play punishes overpursuit since the trap block turns their own penetration into a cutback lane.
