Read Option out of Shotgun Tight Y Off is a zone read run play built around the QB's live mesh point with the HB, using the offensive line to run inside zone blocking while the QB reads the play side defensive end. The diagram shows the QB stepping into the mesh with the HB while the line flows to create a run lane, giving the QB the option to hand off on the zone track or pull and keep it himself. This is a base run concept, not a pass play, so the primary read progression is the play side EDGE defender's crash or contain before deciding to give or keep.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check the box count and see if the defense has an extra defender assigned to the QB, since that neutralizes the read option keep entirely. Watch the play side defensive end's first step after the snap, if he crashes down hard on the HB that is your green light to pull and keep. User the play side linebacker or DE manually to sit on the mesh point and force a bad pitch or fumble, this is the most common way good players stop this run. Zone coverages with light boxes get gashed by this concept, but stacked fronts with a spy or contain rusher shut down the QB keep option. Post-snap, key the flow of the second level linebackers, if they overpursue to the RB's zone track the backside cutback or QB keep lane will be wide open.
Usage Tips
Use pre-snap motion or a QB spy check to confirm the defense hasn't shifted extra numbers to the play side before the snap.
Identify if the defense is playing a 4-3 under or 3-4 look, since a crashing DE almost always means you should pull the ball and attack the alley yourself.
Mix this in on early downs against aggressive defensive fronts that key the RB, since it punishes teams that send the EDGE hard up field.
Pair Read Option with RPO Zone Peek or RPO Peek Slant from the same set so the defense has to respect both the give and the perimeter throw, keeping linebackers honest.
On third and short, call this when you've shown outside zone runs earlier in the game, since defenders will bite on the zone flow and open up the QB keep lane.
