Cheat Outside Zone is a zone run play out of Shotgun Tight Y Off with a cheat motion built in to help the offensive line get an edge on outside zone blocking. The diagram shows the tight end and running back working in tandem toward the play side, with the offensive line flowing laterally to reach block defenders and create a cutback lane. This is a run play designed to attack the perimeter, and the primary read progression is the running back keying the play side edge defender, pressing the line of scrimmage before deciding to bounce outside, bend it back to the cutback lane, or stick it up through the crease.

Defensive Reads

Watch the play side defensive end and outside linebacker alignment before the snap, if they are lined up wide and squared to the line they are reading run first and will be tough to reach block. Key the linebacker depth at the snap, shallow linebackers who fill fast can blow up the cutback lane, so look to bounce this outside against light box fronts. Beats one gap fronts and defenses that overpursue with linebackers flowing hard to the play call, since the cutback lane opens up naturally. Gets shut down by disciplined two gap defenders and defenses that stay home with edge defenders staying square and not overcommitting. Post-snap, watch for a user controlled defender spying the running back or crashing down the line, that is your signal to cut it back immediately rather than forcing the bounce outside.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion to identify if the defense shifts a linebacker or safety toward the play side, which tells you if the cutback lane will be open.

Check the box count before the snap. If the defense has six or more in the box, consider using RPO Zone Peek or RPO Alert Bubble from this same set instead to make them pay for stacking the run.

Hot route the tight end into a quick out if you see a linebacker crashing hard downhill, giving your quarterback a checkdown option on obvious run blitzes.

This play hits hardest on early downs (first and second down, normal distance) when defenses are still respecting balanced run and pass looks.

Pair this with Duo and Inside Zone earlier in a series so the defense commits to filling inside gaps, then hit Cheat Outside Zone to attack the edge once linebackers are flowing hard to the interior.
