Cheat Outside Zone is an outside zone run play out of Shotgun Tight Y Off with a pre-snap motion tag that cheats a blocker or the ball carrier toward the play side before the snap. The diagram shows the tight end and offensive line flowing laterally in a zone blocking scheme with the running back path stretching wide before reading the cutback lane. This is a zone run play designed to attack edge defenders horizontally, forcing them to widen and creating vertical seams for a cutback if the defense over-pursues.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, key the safety alignment: single high shells with the strong safety cheating into the box signal a run blitz look, so be ready to user the play side linebacker at the mesh point. Watch cornerback depth on the motion side, tight press alignment usually means man coverage and a lighter edge to attack. Post-snap, read the play side defensive end first, if he crashes down hard the cutback lane opens behind the zone flow. Zone Cheat Outside Zone struggles against gap-exchange run fits and scrape exchange linebackers who stay disciplined on the cutback lane, so avoid this against defenses showing heavy inside run commitment. If the user defender flows hard with the zone action and abandons the backside, call the cutback immediately instead of forcing the ball outside.
Usage Tips
Use the motion to identify if the defense is in man or zone before the snap, if defenders shift with the motion man it confirms man coverage and softens the edge for the zone run. Run this on early downs like first and 10 or second and short to keep defensive fronts honest and set up play-action shots later in the drive. Pair this with RPO Zone Alert Glance or RPO Zone Alert Omaha from the same set so the defense has to respect both the run and the quick pass off the same zone action. Hot route the tight end to a chip block if you are facing a wide 9 technique or a slanting defensive end that crashes hard inside. Attack light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box, and avoid this call into stacked fronts with extra linebackers unless you plan to bounce it outside immediately.
