PA Jailbreak Screen out of Shotgun Tight Y Off is a play-action screen pass built to punish aggressive pass rushers and blitz-heavy defenses. Off the play fake, the play sets up a screen to the perimeter receiver, with the diagram showing the receiver releasing and settling before working back toward the sideline as blockers get out in front. The primary read is simply the screen receiver, with the QB selling the play-action fake first before turning and delivering the screen on time.
Watch for blitz-heavy fronts and Cover 0 or Cover 1 man looks, since aggressive pass rush lanes are exactly what this screen exploits Beware of teams that stay disciplined with a spy or scrape linebacker who reads the screen instead of biting on play action Key the defensive ends and outside linebackers, if they crash hard upfield on the fake they take themselves out of the screen passing lane Zone coverages with underneath defenders sitting in short flat zones can jump the screen route and blow it up for a loss If the user controls a linebacker and stays home instead of flowing with the run fake, this play loses most of its value
Call this play when you see linebackers creeping up pre-snap or a defense that has been bringing pressure on early downs
Use it as a change of pace after running Inside Zone or Duo from the same Tight Y Off set to keep the defense honest against run action
Sell the play-action fake with a hard commit on the joystick so linebackers bite and vacate the throwing lane
Best used on first or second down when the defense is likely to load the box or blitz off the edge
Pair with RPO Zone Peek or RPO Alert Bubble earlier in a series so the defense respects both the quick perimeter game and the play-action screen look
