RPO Zone Alert Glance is a run pass option out of Shotgun Tight Y Off that pairs an inside zone run with a glance route (quick slant) from the slot, giving the quarterback a pre-snap and post-snap alert key on the second level defender. The offensive line executes zone blocking rules while the quarterback reads the alert defender, usually a linebacker or overhang, to decide between handing off the zone run or pulling and firing the glance route immediately. This is a zone beater at its core since the glance window opens against off coverage or light box zone drops, and the primary read progression is box count first, then the alert defender's reaction to the run fake before deciding pass or run.
Watch for safeties rotating down into the box pre-snap since that signals man coverage or a run blitz that can outnumber your zone scheme Check linebacker depth at the snap, if the alert defender sits shallow and flat footed the glance throw will be there immediately Cover 3 and Cover 4 zone shells with passive linebacker drops get exploited by the glance route since the throwing window opens fast in the intermediate area User controlled defenders sitting the alert route or lurking underneath can jump the glance throw, so quarterbacks need to feel that user movement and pull it down to the run Aggressive fire zone blitzes or run blitzes with linebackers crashing downhill will disrupt the zone run, so keying blitz indicators pre-snap should push you toward the pass option instead
Count the box pre-snap and if you see six or fewer defenders in the box, lean run and let the zone play out behind your blocking scheme
Identify the alert defender before the snap, usually the play side linebacker or slot defender, since his depth and leverage tell you whether the glance window is open
Use this play on early downs like first and second and ten when defenses are still guessing between run and pass fits
Hot route the backside receiver into a quick out or hitch if you see the defense selling out to stop the glance route
Pair this with RPO Zone Peek and RPO Zone Alert Bubble in the same series so defenders cannot key on one specific alert route and are forced to respect every option equally
