Choice Pivot Return out of Shotgun Tight Y Off lines up with a bunched trio to the left and a single receiver to the right, using pre-snap motion to shift the picture before the snap. The left side runs a vertical release that breaks hard back to the pylon paired with a wheel style go route stacking outside, while the boundary X runs an option choice route that pivots at the top of its stem, and the backside receiver on the right works a deep out after a stutter release. Blocking is standard shotgun pass protection with the back releasing on a delayed swing to the flat, making this a versatile man beater built around the choice route as the primary read with the deep comeback and wheel as change of pace options against zone drops.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify if the defense shifts a linebacker or safety toward the motion man, that tells you whether they are in man or zone match. If the corner over the choice route is playing outside leverage, expect the receiver to break inside, if he is playing inside leverage expect the outside break. Watch for a user controlled defender sitting in the shallow hook zone, since that is the primary lurk threat against the pivot route and can jump the break for a pick six. Cover 3 with a sky safety rotation tends to shut down the wheel route on the left because the flat defender can carry it up the numbers, so avoid forcing that throw into a rotated shell. Man blitzes with a slot corner blitzing off the left bunch are the biggest risk, since the back releasing late on the swing may not get enough protection help, so account for extra rushers before snapping if you see pressure indicators.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, use motion on the left bunch to force the defense to declare man or zone before the snap, this is your first indicator for which route to prioritize. Against man coverage lean on the choice pivot route since the defender has to mirror the break and the pivot creates natural separation. If you see two high safeties post-snap, work the deep out on the right side since zone defenders will sink under the pivot and open up the sideline. Pair this call with Wheel Spot and Mesh Spot from the same set so the defense has to respect both quick game and vertical shots off similar formation looks. On third and medium, the choice route is money because you can option it in or out based on the leverage of the nearest defender, so stay patient with your eyes before committing to the throw.
