Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment before the motion, a single high safety who does not rotate toward the motion suggests man coverage and tells you to key the backside seam and post. Watch the flat defender and underneath linebacker on the frontside, if they widen with the pivot route and return route you have room to work the return route back inside for a chunk gain. Post-snap, identify any user controlled defender sitting in the shallow flat or hovering as a lurk threat near the running back release, since that defender can jump the checkdown and blow up your last resort option. Usage Tips

Use the pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone before the snap, if the defender follows across the formation you know you are getting man coverage and can trust the seam and post combo on the backside. Against zone shells, work your eyes to the pivot route sitting down in the flat and the return route breaking back inside, since these are designed to settle into soft spots against Cover 3 and Cover 4 zone drops. Hot route the running back into a check release or a quick option route on third and long if the protection count is unfavorable against a four man rush, this gives you an outlet if your five man protection breaks down.
