Jet HB Trap is a misdirection run play out of Shotgun Tight Y Off that uses jet motion across the backfield to influence linebacker flow before handing the ball off on a trap concept. The offensive line pulls a guard or blocker to kick out the first defender past the point of attack while the jet motion man either draws pursuit or serves as a potential decoy pitch, creating a gap for the HB to work through. This is a run play designed to exploit downhill aggression from linebackers and overplayed jet sweep fits, with the primary read being the trap block and whether the defense flows hard to the motion or stays honest at the mesh point.
Check linebacker depth before the snap, linebackers sitting close to the line of scrimmage are more likely to overreact to the jet motion and vacate the trap lane. Identify if the defense is running a spy or gap exchange scheme up front, since this can neutralize the trap block by keeping the interior defender home. Look for user-controlled defenders flowing hard with the jet man post snap, that lateral pursuit is exactly what opens the trap lane for the HB. Beware of A gap blitzes or interior stunts that cross the trap block's path, these can blow up the play before the puller reaches his target. This run beats base 4-3 and 3-4 fronts with aggressive linebackers, but struggles against disciplined defenses that stay square and read the mesh point instead of chasing motion.
Use jet motion pre-snap to bait linebackers into flowing with the sweep action, then let the trap block clear the alley for the HB. Watch defensive line alignment before the snap, if the defensive tackle is shaded hard to one gap the trap block becomes much easier to seal. Call this on early downs like first and second down when defenses are more likely to sit in base fronts rather than sub packages built to stop the run. Pair this with RPO Zone Peek or RPO Alert Bubble earlier in a drive so the defense respects the jet action as a passing threat, which slows down linebacker triggers on Jet HB Trap later. Avoid calling this into stacked box looks with extra defenders crashing downhill, since the trap blocker can get overwhelmed by numbers.
