TE Corner out of Shotgun Tight Y Off lines up with a bunched left side and the TE attached to the formation, sending the tight end on a corner route that breaks outside toward the sideline as the primary vertical threat. The outside receiver on the left runs a deep post while the inside slot receiver runs a quick out at the sticks, and the right receiver runs a short out route underneath. This is a man beater built to attack the flat to corner combination, using the TE corner route to isolate a linebacker or safety in space while the post occupies the deep middle defender, so the progression starts with the TE corner, works to the post if the safety jumps the corner route, and checks down to either out route against man leverage.
Defensive Reads
Watch the flat defender and the deep half safety on the TE corner side, if the flat defender sinks with the corner route the TE has room but if a safety rotates over the top the window closes fast. Man coverage with a linebacker matched on the TE is the ideal look since tight ends typically win the corner route against linebacker speed. Cover 3 with a hard sinking corner can undercut the route if the cornerback reads the quarterback's eyes and jumps the throw, so a good user defender sitting on the corner route kills this concept. Check linebacker depth at the snap, shallow linebackers who bite on the underneath out routes leave the intermediate corner throw wide open. Beware of a lurking safety cheating toward the boundary pre-snap, that alignment signals a possible double team on the TE corner and should push the read to the post or the outlet outs.
Usage Tips
Look for single high safety shells or man coverage pre-snap since the TE corner route exploits linebackers who cannot stay on top of tight ends in space.
If you see two deep safeties, hot route the post to a dig or bench the TE corner read and work the underneath outs since the corner window shrinks against Cover 2 or Cover 4.
Use this on third and medium to third and long where the corner route depth of ten to twelve yards matches the sticks and forces a defender to choose between the flat and the sideline.
Pair this with RPO Peek Slant or RPO Alert Out from the same set to keep the defense honest on run fits before hitting them with the TE corner shot play.
Motion or shift the slot receiver pre-snap to identify if the defense is in man or zone based on whether a defender follows across the formation.
