Breakdown

Duo out of Shotgun Tight Y Off is a gap power run scheme designed to double team the interior defensive line before working combo blocks up to the second level. The offensive line and TE show double team blocks at the point of attack, climbing to the second level linebackers, while the HB reads the initial double team and presses the line before making one cut off the block. This is a run play built to punish light boxes and grinds through gap scheme rather than beating coverage, with the primary read starting on the double team leverage of the first level defender to decide the cut lane.

Defensive Reads

Read the depth of the linebackers pre-snap, if they are sitting tight to the line in run fits Duo will struggle to climb the double team cleanly Identify single high versus two high safety shells, single high alignments often signal an extra run defender in the box which hurts Duo's blocking numbers Key the defensive tackle alignment inside the double team, if he is shaded hard to one gap the RB cut lane will bend opposite that shade Watch for a user linebacker sitting downhill pre-snap looking to shoot the A or B gap, this can blow up the double team before it climbs Look for nano blitz packages or edge pressure off the TE side since Duo relies on the offensive line holding up long enough for the double team to release to the second level

Usage Tips

Check the box count pre-snap and only run Duo into 6 or fewer defenders in the box since the double team blocks need numbers advantage to climb cleanly

Use the RB read progression by pressing the double team first then reading the second level linebacker fit before committing to a cut lane

Pair this with RPO Zone Peek or RPO Alert Bubble from the same formation so the defense has to respect both the interior run and the quick perimeter throw off similar shotgun alignment

Best called on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) when you want to establish tempo and set up play action shots later like Zone Fake Jet or PA Slot Cross

Against stacked boxes with 7 or more defenders, motion or hot route the TE into a chip block to help control the edge before snapping
