Zone Fake Jet is a play-action pass out of Shotgun Tight Y Off that sells jet motion and inside zone run action before the QB pulls it back to throw. The diagram shows a single deep route breaking outside up the numbers off the play fake, with a shallow crosser working underneath from the opposite side and the offensive line sliding to mimic zone run blocking. The RB fakes the jet sweep motion across the formation to freeze linebackers and second level defenders, making this primarily a shot play designed to hit the deep out or corner route once the run fake pulls the defense's eyes downhill. Primary read progression starts with the deep outside breaking route off the play fake, then works down to the underneath crosser if the safety stays deep or the corner sinks with the vertical stem.
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing run blitz or crashing linebackers toward the jet motion side, since that confirms they are biting on the play action and the deep route will have a soft window. Watch the free safety depth at the snap, if he stays home in a two high shell instead of stepping up on the run fake, the deep outside route becomes a low percentage read and you should progress to the underneath crosser. Key the flow of the linebackers, if they sprint hard toward the line of scrimmage on the jet fake, that confirms the play design worked and the middle of the field should be open for the crosser. This play struggles against zone shells with disciplined linebackers who sit and read instead of biting, particularly Tampa 2 or Cover 3 with a hard cheating corner who does not respect the run fake. Man coverage with a lurking linebacker over the crosser can jump the underneath route, so if you see a linebacker shaded inside pre-snap, favor the deep route in your progression instead.
Run this on early downs like first or second and short when defenses are keyed on stopping inside zone and jet sweep tendencies, since the play fake carries more weight when your run game has been established. Check the safety alignment pre-snap, a single high shell with the strong safety creeping into the box is a green light to take the top off the defense with the outside breaking route. If the corner shows hard outside leverage or bails immediately at the snap, hot route the underneath crosser into a quicker option or check it down to avoid a negative play. Pair this with Inside Zone and Read Option earlier in a drive to bait linebackers into flowing hard on run fakes, then dial up Zone Fake Jet once you see linebackers cheating up on the jet motion. Against aggressive defenses that bring extra run support to the edge on jet sweep looks, this play punishes overcommitment by attacking the vacated deep half.
