Cheat RPO Zone Alert Bubble is an RPO built out of Shotgun Tight Y Off with 11 personnel that gives the quarterback a true run/pass conflict read. Up front the offensive line runs an inside zone blocking scheme while the backside slot receiver runs a bubble screen with the outside receiver stalk blocking to set up the perimeter throw, and on the opposite side the outside receiver runs a vertical seam alert route. The primary read progression starts with the alert receiver's vertical seam if the defense shows a hard box or blitz look, then works down to the bubble screen as the zone/RPO alert, with the inside zone run as the default handoff if the box count favors the run.
Defensive Reads
Key the flow of the linebackers at the snap since aggressive downhill linebackers open up the bubble screen and the seam alert route behind them. Watch the slot defender assigned to the bubble side, if he sits flat-footed or bites on the run fake the quarterback will pull and throw the perimeter screen. Man coverage on the outside alert receiver is the biggest vulnerability here, especially if the corner is playing off with no safety help over the top on that side. Sitting in a two high shell with a nickel corner reading run/pass instead of crashing down takes away both the bubble and the seam alert, forcing the offense into the standard inside zone run. Users should stay disciplined and avoid jumping the bubble screen with a defender out of position, since a good quarterback will bait defenders with eyes on the perimeter before delivering to the seam.
Usage Tips
Check the box count before the snap and give the ball to the running back on inside zone if the defense is in a light box with six or fewer defenders. If a linebacker or slot corner cheats outside toward the bubble side pre-snap, pull the ball and hit the seam alert route on the backside for an explosive gain. Use the bubble screen as your answer against blitz-heavy calls since the quick perimeter throw negates interior pressure before it develops. Pair this play with RPO Zone Alert Glance and RPO Zone Alert Omaha in the same set so the defense cannot sit on one alert read and has to respect both the seam shot and the glance window. Save this call for early down and manageable distance situations like first and ten or second and short where defenses are more likely to sit in base run fits that this RPO is designed to exploit.
