Doubles Shot is a play-action flood concept out of Shotgun Tight Y Off that attacks all three levels of the field on one side. The outside receiver runs a corner route off play-action, the slot runs a deep out that flashes underneath the corner, and the inside receiver releases into a short seam or curl to hold linebackers, while the backside runs an independent post. Read the flood side first, working corner to out, since the high low stresses any single deep defender and gives you a built in Cover 3 beater against a rolled up flat defender.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify single high versus two high safeties, single high tells you the flood side corner route has one less defender to worry about over the top. Watch the flat or curl to flat defender at the snap, if he sinks with the out route the corner route should be open behind him. Key the play side outside linebacker or slot corner for blitz indicators, a hard crash on the play fake often means a blitz that leaves the flood side wide open underneath. Look for user controlled safeties rotating late to the flood side, this is the biggest threat since a lurking safety can jump the deep out or undercut the corner route. Man coverage across from the backside post receiver with no safety help over the top is the green light to throw that post immediately off the play fake.
Usage Tips
Check the safety alignment pre-snap, if you see two high safeties widen the corner route timing and lean on the deep out since Cover 2 or Cover 4 corners will sit on the flood. Against Cover 3 or single high shells, take the corner route first because the flat defender cannot cover both levels of the flood. Use play action on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) so linebackers bite on the run fake and open passing lanes for the seam and post. Hot route the backside post into a quick slant if you see man coverage across from that receiver, it turns into an easy man beater against off coverage corners. Pair this with RPO Alert Out or RPO Peek Slant from the same set to keep the defense guessing between run action and flood concepts, then call Doubles Shot once you have seen their run fits.
