Breakdown

Mesh Spot out of Shotgun Tight Y Off (11 personnel) sends the two inside receivers on shallow crossing routes underneath while the outside receiver on the mesh side runs a corner route vertically up the sideline. The nearside slot runs a quick spot route settling into the zone window, and the backside receiver runs a shallow drag that criss-crosses with the mesh combo to create natural rub traffic against man coverage. This is a classic man beater and Cover 3 beater built on rub concepts, with the primary read progression going spot to mesh crossers underneath and then to the corner route if a defender bites on the shorter stuff.

Defensive Reads

Read the safety depth pre-snap. Two high safeties sitting deep signal Cover 2 or Cover 4, which means the corner route is your explosive shot but the underneath crossers may face a robber defender. Watch the linebacker depth at the snap. If they sink hard into passing lanes, the mesh crossers will be sitting ducks for a user-controlled lurk defender, so account for that before forcing the throw. Man coverage shells with corners playing tight outside leverage get exposed by the natural rub from the mesh concept, since trailing defenders get picked off by traffic. Cover 3 with a hard-flowing Sam or Will linebacker into the shallow zone can undercut the spot route, so be ready to work the deeper crosser or the corner route instead. If you see a blitz look with the slot defender crashing downhill pre-snap, expect the hot route to trigger automatically or the ball needs to come out on the spot route before the pocket collapses.

Usage Tips

Use this on third and short to third and medium since the spot route and mesh crossers give you easy access to the sticks against zone drops.

Check the middle of the field pre-snap: if you see two safeties rotating late, expect Cover 3 or Cover 4 match, and the crossers will pick up natural picks against man defenders trying to trail through traffic.

If the defense shows Cover 2 or Cover 4 with corners playing outside leverage, hot route the corner route to a deep out or throw the spot route quickly before the underneath zone can squeeze the window.

Combine this with Doubles Shot or Switch WR Drag earlier in a series so the defense starts biting on crossing traffic, then hit the corner route for an explosive play once they overplay the mesh.

Against aggressive man blitzes, trust the rub action from the mesh crossers to spring the spot route open in the shallow zone, and get the ball out on time before the sim pressure gets home.
