Defensive Reads

Presnap check safety depth and alignment, two high safeties usually signal the corner route will be capped, so plan to go underneath to the mesh or spot. Watch for a cornerback pressed on the outside receiver running the corner route, a hard jam disrupts timing and forces a checkdown to the mesh side. Postsnap key the flow of underneath linebackers, if they widen to the flat with the mesh crossers, the middle spot route opens up for an easy completion. Look for a user controlled lurk defender sitting in the shallow crossing lane, this is the primary threat that can jump the mesh route and bait a turnover. Man coverage with no help over the top gets exposed by the corner route, so aggressive blitz packages that leave a single deep defender are vulnerable to the big play.

Usage Tips

Presnap identify whether the defense is showing single high or two high safeties, since the corner route on the right becomes the immediate shot play against Cover 3 or Cover 1 with no help over the top.

Against man coverage trust the mesh crossers on the left, the natural traffic created by the crossing routes forces defenders to fight through picks and creates easy separation for the shallow crosser.

Against zone shells with underneath defenders sitting, work the spot route as your rhythm throw, it settles in the soft spot of Cover 3 or Cover 4 underneath zones.

Use hot routes to adjust the corner route into a deep out or comeback if you diagnose a hard outside cornerback jam at the line, this prevents the receiver from getting knocked off his stem.

Pair this play with Mtn Mesh Spot or Mesh Whips from the same set to keep the defense guessing on similar route distributions while changing formation strength or motion.
