Mesh Whips is a man beater out of Shotgun Tight Y Off with 11 personnel that layers two crossing whip routes underneath a vertical clear-out. The two left receivers run a mesh style combo: the outside receiver whips back to the flat while the inside receiver drags across the field on a whip route working left to right, crossing paths to create natural rub traffic against man defenders. On the right side, the slot runs a shallow whip back across the field while the outside receiver clears vertically up the sideline to occupy the deep defender and open space underneath. The primary read progression starts with the crossing whip routes underneath, working from the shallow drag to the flat whip, then climbs to the vertical clear-out only if the defense sits low in a zone shell.
Watch for a linebacker sitting in a shallow zone drop, since he can undercut the underneath whip crossers and jump the throw before it develops. Key the safety depth pre-snap, a single high safety in the middle of the field often signals man coverage that mesh traffic exploits, while two deep safeties suggest zone drops that clog the crossing lanes. Man coverage with no help over the top gets picked apart by the natural rub created between the two whip routes, so trail technique from cornerbacks is a green light to target the crossers immediately. Watch for a user controlled defender sitting in a lurk spot near the mesh point, since a smart defender will bait the quarterback into an interception if he anticipates the crossing routes. Cover 3 with a hard flat defender can squat on the whip route to the flat, so identify that defender pre-snap and be ready to work the deeper drag instead.
Call this on third and short to medium since the whip routes settle quickly and give you a high percentage completion against man coverage.
Pre-snap, look for man indicators like press corners or a single high safety since the mesh traffic is designed to rub off defenders in man to man.
Use the vertical route on the right as a clock beater against zone drops, since it drags the deep defender away and opens a window for the crossing routes underneath.
If the defense shows Cover 2 or Cover 4 with soft corners, hot route the flat whip into a quick out to speed up the read against zone beaters.
Pair Mesh Whips with RPO Peek Slant or RPO Alert Bubble from this same set to keep the defense honest on run fits before hitting them with the crossing combo.
