Breakdown

RPO Zone Peek out of Shotgun Tight Y Off is a true run-pass option built on an inside zone blocking scheme with a peek route tacked on from the backside. The offensive line executes zone steps while the running back reads the leverage of the alerted defender, typically a linebacker or slot defender, while the quarterback simultaneously peeks a receiver breaking inside for a quick throwing window. This is a zone beater against light boxes and off coverage since it punishes defenses that crash down on the run fit, and the primary read progression is box count first, then the peek defender's reaction to determine handoff versus throw.

Defensive Reads

Watch linebacker depth at the snap since shallow, aggressive linebackers crashing downhill are exactly what triggers the peek throw read for the quarterback. Check safety alignment pre-snap, a single high safety or two-high shell that rotates down into the box opens up the peek window over the vacated area. If the defense shows man coverage on the peek receiver with no help underneath, expect the quarterback to throw since the leverage almost always favors the route. Blitzing off the edge does not usually beat this play since the conflict defender is the one being read, so overloaded fronts with extra second level pressure are more effective at shutting down both options. User-controlled defenders sitting on the peek route or spying the run fit can bait the quarterback into a bad decision, so disciplined zone defenders who stay square rather than committing early are the best counter.

Usage Tips

Count the box pre-snap and only pull the ball if the peek defender widens or bites on run action, otherwise hand it off into the zone scheme. Use this on early downs like first and second and ten to keep defenses honest against both run and pass without changing personnel. Motion the slot or TE if your version allows it to force the defense to declare man or zone before the snap. Pair this with RPO Peek Slant and RPO Zone Alert Glance in the same drive to keep linebackers guessing on which route is live off the run action. If the defense starts sending extra run blitzers to stop the zone, live off the peek throw hot route and let the quarterback pull it every snap until they adjust back.
