The primary read progression starts with the corner-flat combo to the field side, then works down to the mesh crossers underneath if the corner and seam are covered, using the flat/out as your check-down against soft zone drops.
Defensive Reads
Key the safety depth and corner alignment before the snap, since a single-high safety cheating late to the seam or corner route signals Cover 3 and tells you to attack the flat and mesh crossers underneath. Watch for a linebacker or nickel defender sitting in the mesh crossing lane, which usually means the defense is playing a man scheme or a rat in the hole technique designed to jump the shallow crosses. If you see two deep safeties splitting the field evenly, expect a Cover 2 or Cover 4 shell that will squeeze the corner route hard, so be ready to check down to the flat or crossers immediately. On the user side, watch for a defender flashing down to lurk the mesh crossers right at the snap, since a well timed user blitz or spy can undercut the shallow routes before they develop separation. Man coverage with no help over the top on the seam or corner route is the biggest green light, since both routes will win against trail technique if the quarterback resets his feet and delivers on time.
Usage Tips
Presnap, identify whether the defense is showing a two-high shell or single-high safety, since the corner route and seam attack Cover 3 hard while the mesh crossers give you a built-in answer versus man coverage. If you see man coverage with a linebacker on your crossing routes, trust the mesh to create natural rubs and separation for an easy completion. Use this on early downs or third and short to medium since the flat/out route gives you a safe conversion option if your deeper reads are covered. Hot route the flat defender's man to a quick out or drag if you diagnose a Cover 0 blitz look, since the mesh concept needs time to develop.
