Mtn Spinner HB Inside is a pre-snap motion run play out of Shotgun Tight Y Off with 11 personnel. The diagram shows the HB motioning across the backfield before the snap into a spinner mesh point exchange with the QB, then hitting the inside gap behind a downblocking line. The primary read is the interior gap between the guards, so key on the fullback/TE downblock leverage and the frontside linebacker fit before deciding whether to cut back or stay north.
Watch for a linebacker cheating downhill pre-snap toward the mesh point, this signals the defense has diagnosed the spinner action. Base 4-3 and 3-4 fronts without extra defenders in the box are the easiest shells to gash with this inside run. If the defense runs a nano blitz or crashes both A-gaps, the play loses its blocking angles and gets blown up before the mesh point. Check safety depth before the snap, a single high safety sitting deep leaves the box light and favors the runner. Post-snap, track the frontside linebacker's shoulder turn, if he flows hard with the motion the cutback lane behind him opens up.
Use the pre-snap motion to identify if the defense shifts a linebacker or safety over the top, which tells you if they are keying run to that side.
Run this on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and short) when defenses are more likely to sit in base fronts rather than nickel or dime packages.
If the defense shows a stacked box with 8 or more defenders, consider hot routing this to a pass check or audible into an RPO from the same set.
Pair this with RPO Zone Peek or Read Option from the same formation so the defense cannot key the spinner motion as a run tell.
Trust your downblocking line and press the mesh point hard, do not bail early on the inside track or you will lose the gap integrity the play is designed around.
