Trey

SpecialistsGadgetSLWR

Overview

Singleback Trey puts three receivers to one side in a stacked trips look with the tight end aligned as the point man, leaving a single receiver isolated on the backside. That backside iso is the whole reason to run this set. Unlike Singleback Wing or Doubles where the strength is balanced, Trey forces the defense to declare coverage strength pre-snap, and whatever the defense leaves on the weak side is usually a corner with no help. If you have a true X receiver, this is where you find him running a fade or slant with a two way go against man.

Strengths

  • Corner Double In is one of the best zone beaters in the set: the two in cuts sit in the void behind curl droppers while the corner route pulls the safety, and the backside iso gives you an instant answer versus Cover 3 cloud.
  • Trips alignment creates natural rub and stack releases on Stick and Curl Combo, so man coverage defenders get caught in the wash without you needing to motion anyone.
  • RPO Stretch Alert Lookie and RPO Power Alert Screen give you two conflict reads off the same personnel, which means you can run the ball and still punish a crashing defensive end or an over pursuing linebacker.
  • HB Stretch, HB Zone Wk, and HB Dive cover inside, outside, and weak side run fits from one look, so you are not tipping run direction by changing formations.
  • PA Boot and PA Solid Corner sell the outside zone action and get the quarterback off the spot, which beats users who sit in the middle of the field reading your eyes.

Weaknesses

  • Only one back in protection means A gap and weak side edge pressure comes fast, and nano blitzes from the backside of the trips get home before the deeper routes on Corner Double In develop.
  • The trips side is easy to bracket. A good opponent will slide safety help to the strong side and leave your isolated receiver in single high man, which kills the concept if you do not have a receiver who can win one on one.
  • PA Boot and PA Solid Corner both roll the quarterback into the boundary, and any edge pressure on that side turns the play into a sack or a throwaway with no checkdown.
  • HB Dive and HB Zone Wk struggle against heavy inside blitz looks since you have no fullback or second tight end to seal the extra body.
  • Predictable tendency risk: running trips every snap lets a user simply flip coverage strength and shade underneath, taking away Stick and the short in cuts.

Usage Tips

Check the safety alignment first. Single high with the free safety shaded to trips means your isolated backside receiver is live, so hot route him to a fade or slant and throw before the safety can rotate.

On third and medium, run Stick and hot route the backside receiver to a curl or drag. You get a high low read to the trips side and an outlet away from the pressure.

Use RPO Power Alert Screen against man heavy defenses that vacate the trips side, and RPO Stretch Alert Lookie when you see a defensive end crashing hard on outside zone.

Alternate HB Stretch and HB Zone Wk from the same look to keep run direction hidden, then come back with PA Boot once linebackers start flowing hard on the play side.

Block the running back or use the slide protection audible before running Corner Double In. The route combo needs time, and without a protection adjustment you will eat a free rusher off the weak edge.
