Breakdown
PA Solid Corner from Singleback Trey uses play-action to hold the linebackers before attacking vertically with two deep routes. The outside receiver runs a deep corner route stemming from the sideline stack while the inside slot receiver runs a vertical seam that breaks outside into a corner route as well, creating a two-man high-low stack on the boundary corner. The backside receiver runs a deep comeback away from the concept to hold the far side safety. This is a play-action pass designed to beat single-high looks and man coverage by stacking two corner breaking routes into the same zone, forcing a corner and safety to choose who to cover. The primary read starts with the inside seam-to-corner route working outside, then progresses to the outside corner route if the flat defender or corner jumps the shorter break.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify whether the safety is aligned deep middle (single high) or split evenly with another safety (two high), since this concept is built to punish single high shells with its stacked corner routes. Watch linebacker depth at the snap. If they aggressively step up on the play-action fake, the seam-to-corner route will have a clean throwing lane behind them. Post-snap, key the flat defender or curl to flat player on the play side. If he widens with the seam route immediately, the underneath window closes and the quarterback should look to the deeper corner route instead. Beware of Cover 3 buzz or Cover 4 quarters shells where the corner sinks and the safety rotates over the top, since these coverages put two defenders on the stacked corner routes and take away the primary read. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is where this play wins most often, since the double corner stack creates natural picks and rub opportunities that man defenders struggle to fight through.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs or in second and short situations where the defense expects run action, since the play-action fake needs linebackers to bite for the double corner concept to open up.
Check the safety alignment before the snap. Against single-high (Cover 1 or Cover 3) shells, the two corner routes will stack the boundary and overload the deep third defender.
If you see two safeties deep pre-snap, look to hot route the backside comeback into a deeper route or check it down quickly, since Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells can rob the corner routes with two deep defenders on that side.
Use the play-action fake to freeze linebackers, then key the flat or curl defender. If he sinks with the seam route, throw the low corner route underneath him. If he stays flat footed on the run fake, hit the seam-to-corner route as it clears him.
