Corner Double In lines up out of Singleback Trey with three receivers bunched to one side of the formation. The two inside receivers run in-breaking routes that settle into the middle of the field while the outside receiver stacks a corner route up the sideline off a vertical stem, creating a natural high low stretch on the flat to deep third defender. There is no visible pass protection or running back action in the diagram, so this is a quick strike man beater built to attack a single defender with the double in and corner combo. The primary read progression starts with the corner route on the vertical stem, then works down to the two in routes underneath if the corner is taken away.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check for man coverage indicators like a defender shaded outside the bunch receiver with no help over the top, this is when the corner route wins. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, shallow linebackers who crash toward the in routes leave the corner route wide open against man coverage. Post-snap, identify any user controlled defender sitting in a lurk position over the double in routes, this signals zone coverage and you should look immediately to the corner route before the flat defender can adjust. Cover 3 with a hard charging corner blitz off the edge shuts this down quickly since there is no protection shown to handle pressure, so get the ball out on time. Against Cover 2, the corner route can get squeezed by the deep half safety, so be ready to check down to the shorter in route breaking underneath the flat defender.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing man or zone by checking cornerback alignment on the bunched receivers, tight man alignment with no cushion tells you the corner route should win over the top.
Look for a single high safety shell, this tells you the corner route has a soft spot in the deep third and the double in routes will occupy underneath zone defenders.
If you see two deep safeties, hot route one of the in routes into a dig or seam to attack the vacated middle of the field before the safeties can rotate down.
This play works best on second and medium or third and short to medium because the double in concept gives you an easy underneath completion if the corner is covered.
Pair this play with HB Stretch or HB Zone Wk earlier in a drive to get defenders keying run, then come back to Corner Double In off the same formation look to catch aggressive linebackers cheating downhill.
