HB Dive out of Singleback Trey is a straight downhill run play designed to hit the A gap fast before the defense can flow. The diagram shows the trips receivers to the right with a tight end attached, while the HB takes a direct handoff and presses the interior gap behind the center and guard blocking. This is a pure run play with no route combos or RPO elements attached, built to punish light boxes and gap exchanges. The primary read progression is simple: identify the first open crease at the point of attack, and if the A gap is clogged, bounce off the initial double team to whichever side the linebacker flow opens.
Defensive Reads
Watch for a stacked Mike linebacker sitting directly behind the center pre-snap, that alignment kills this play at the mesh point. Heavy fronts with an extra defender shaded into the box (seven or eight men) shut down HB Dive since there is no numbers advantage up front. Blitz packages that send both linebackers through the interior gaps on a delayed timer will beat this play before the back can build speed, so respect A gap or B gap blitzes on early downs. User controlled linebackers who key the mesh point and shoot the gap immediately are the biggest threat, so mix in HB Stretch and PA Boot from the same formation to keep that user honest. Zone shells with light boxes and safeties rotated away from the run tend to get gashed by this play since flow defenders are reading pass first.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs or short yardage when you need a low risk, positive gain play against light boxes. Check the box count before the snap, if the defense has six or fewer defenders in the box this play hits fast and hard. Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance at the Mike linebacker alignment to confirm he is not stacked directly over the center, since that clogs your primary lane. Pair this with RPO Power Alert Screen and RPO Stretch Alert Lookie from the same Trey set so the defense has to respect the perimeter before you go back to the dive, keeping linebackers honest. Sequence HB Dive early in a series to bait aggressive user linebackers into crashing, then counter with HB Stretch or HB Zone Wk once they start over pursuing the A gap.
