Dbls Flex Y Off Close is Shotgun's compressed doubles variation, pairing 11 personnel with a tight end aligned off the ball just outside the tackle box. Instead of the wide splits you get from standard Shotgun Doubles, the flexed slot and the off-ball Y sit tight to the formation, which shrinks the throwing windows for the defense but also shortens every crossing route stem. That tight alignment is the entire point: your inside receivers reach the middle of the field faster, mesh and dagger concepts develop before the safety can rotate, and the off-ball Y can release clean without fighting a jam at the line.
The play list leans heavily on the Mountaineer family (Mtn HB Angle, Mtn Dagger Y In, Mtn Dig Under, Mtn Switch Corner, Mtn Angle Y Wheel, Mtn Slot Post, Mtn HB Fade, Mtn HB Out), which means you get repeated releases from the same alignment with different vertical stems. That repetition is what makes the set dangerous in competitive play. The defense sees identical presnap looks on every snap and has to guess whether the Y is running an in, a wheel, or sitting down as a checkdown. Layer in the jet motion package (Zone Fake Jet 1, Jet Pass Fk Zone 1, PA Zone Fk Jet 1) and you force the defense to account for horizontal motion before the ball is even snapped, which is where the Gadget tag earns its keep.
Personnel-wise, the 3DRB and Power HB tags tell you this set wants a back who can do both jobs. Put a receiving back in and Mtn HB Angle, Mtn HB Out, and Mtn HB Slot Screen become your primary answers to man coverage and heavy pressure. Put a power back in and Inside Zone, Read Option, and RPO Zone Peek Glance let you run at a defense that has spread out to respect the compressed passing game. The SLWR tag matters because your slot receiver is flexed into a space where he can win inside leverage immediately, isolating him against a nickel corner or a linebacker in dime looks with no help over the top on Mtn Slot Post.
Read the nickel defender presnap. If he walks down over the flexed slot with no safety help, go straight to Mtn Slot Post or Mtn Switch Corner for the isolated one-on-one shot.
Use the jet motion plays (Zone Fake Jet 1, Jet Pass Fk Zone 1) early to bait defensive flow, then come back to Inside Zone or Read Option in the same series when the linebackers overcommit to the motion side.
On third down and 5 to 8, run Mtn Dig Under or Mtn Dagger Y In and let the compressed stems get to the hole fast. Against man, check to Mtn HB Angle or Mtn HB Out and let the back win in the vacated space.
Hot route the outside receiver on a fade or a streak to clear the sideline before you throw any of the Mtn intermediate concepts. The compressed alignment naturally leaves that space empty and a hot route keeps the corner from squatting.
Against heavy pressure, use PA Snag or Escape to get the quarterback moving off the spot, and lean on Mtn HB Slot Screen only when you have confirmed the defense is bringing edge heat rather than spot-dropping.
In the red zone, Redzone Scissors and Mtn HB Fade are your primary answers because the compressed splits give you crossing traffic that man coverage cannot navigate inside the 15.
