Mtn Angle Y Wheel is a man beater built around the Y receiver's wheel route out of the backfield motion, designed to isolate a linebacker or slower defender in space against a route that breaks vertically up the sideline. The angle route from the running back clears underneath and occupies the first level defender, while the wheel stretches the seam or flat defender who has to run the route with no help over the top in man coverage. Your primary read starts with the wheel route against man coverage looking for a blown assignment or mismatch, then works down to the angle route as a checkdown against zone drops or when the wheel gets bracketed.
Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment since a single high safety with man coverage underneath is the ideal shell for this play to exploit the wheel route. Watch the linebacker assigned to the motion man, if he trails across the formation in man coverage that confirms the wheel will have a numbers or speed advantage. Post-snap, look for a user-controlled defender flashing down to jump the angle route, which signals the wheel route is uncovered downfield. This play struggles against zone coverage with a flat defender sitting outside and a deep third corner staying over the top of the wheel, since that combination takes away both levels of the route. Blitz packages that bring extra pressure off the edge can disrupt the timing of the wheel route, so check protection or use a hot route to pick up the extra rusher if you see a nano blitz look pre-snap.
Use pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone before the snap, since the defender who follows the motion man across the formation confirms man coverage and opens up the wheel route immediately.
Attack this play on third and medium to third and long when you need a linebacker or safety to defend a receiver in open space with no safety help over the top.
If you see a two high safety shell, be ready to check down to the angle route quickly since the wheel will likely have a defender sitting on top of it.
Pair this call with Mtn HB Angle earlier in a drive so the defense gets comfortable seeing the angle concept, then hit them with the wheel route as a counter once linebackers start jumping the angle route.
Use hot routes to convert the underneath crosser into a quick out if you see man coverage with an aggressive underneath defender jumping routes.
