The primary read progression starts with the corner route winning outside against Cover 2 or Cover 4 leverage, then works down to the crossing route underneath if the corner is capped, with the running back checking down as the final outlet against a hard blitz.
Pre-snap, identify two deep safeties as a strong indicator of Cover 2 or Cover 4, both of which this play is built to beat with the crossing corner route concept. Watch cornerback depth at the snap, since press or hard outside leverage corners struggle to stay on top of the corner route breaking away from them. Post-snap, key the flat defender or underneath zone linebacker, because if he sinks too deep chasing the crosser, the corner route sits wide open in the void behind him. Look for a user-controlled safety lurking over the middle crosser, which signals the quarterback to reset to the corner route or check down to the running back. This play struggles against press man with a deep single high safety cheating over the top, so avoid calling it into Cover 1 or Cover 3 looks with an aggressive robber underneath.
Use this play inside the 20 yard line where the compressed field forces safeties into tighter zone drops that Scissors is designed to exploit. Identify Cover 2 shells pre-snap by reading two safeties deep with corners playing off, since the corner route will split the seam before the safety can rotate over. Against Cover 4 quarters looks, trust the corner route to win against the cornerback's outside leverage if the safety bites on the underneath crosser. Hot route the running back into a check release versus known blitz teams to protect the quarterback while the scissors combo develops downfield. Pair this call with Mtn HB Angle or Y Stick earlier in a series to condition the defense into sitting on shorter routes, then hit Redzone Scissors when you see the same coverage shell to attack over the top.
