PA Snag out of Shotgun Dbls Flex Y Off Close hides a classic Snag concept behind play-action, making it a strong Cover 3 beater against teams that key run fits from under center or pistol looks. The concept stacks a corner route, a flat route, and a snag/hitch underneath from the same side to attack outside zone defenders with conflicting depth reads, while the backside is typically a dig or post to punish single high safeties who cheat toward the play-action fake. Primary read progression starts with the corner route to see if the flat defender widens, then works down to the snag sitting in the void, and finally to the flat as the checkdown or the backside breaker if the defense rotates hard to the trips side.
Pre snap identify single high versus two high safety alignment since this concept is built to punish Cover 3 rotation and will struggle more against true Cover 4 or Cover 2 with a deep half safety sitting on the corner route. Watch the flat defender and curl to flat zone defender after the snap, if he widens with the corner route the snag window opens immediately underneath. Key the play side outside linebacker or nickel defender's initial step, aggressive run fits toward the play action fake open up easy access to the snag sitting at the sticks. Look for user controlled defenders lurking in the shallow flat or snag area, smart Madden defenders will sit on this route so have a built in answer to the backside dig or post if that user peeks up top. Against man coverage looks, especially Cover 1 or Cover 0 with a blitz, this play beats it less cleanly since the routes are not built as primary man beaters, so recognize press man alignment and be ready to protect the quarterback and check down quickly.
Run this on early downs or second and medium when you have already established inside zone or read option from this set to sell the run fake and freeze linebackers. Check the safety alignment pre snap, if you see two high safeties rotate to Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells the corner route may get squeezed, so be ready to hot route it into a deeper post or work the snag underneath instead. Against single high shells the corner and snag combo stresses the flat and curl defenders in Cover 3, so trust the progression and let the play action hold the underneath linebackers for an extra beat. Pair this call with Mtn Dagger Y In or Y Stick earlier in a series so defenses respect the quick game and bite harder on the play fake here. If the corner blitzes off the edge, get the ball out on the snag or flat quickly since your protection is built for a standard four man rush, not extra pressure.
