Counter Y is a gap-scheme run play out of Shotgun Dbls Flex Y Off Close, designed to hit downhill after the offensive line pulls the backside guard and tackle (or TE) to lead the HB through the point of attack. The play uses misdirection with the flow of the line stepping one way before the puller and lead blocker seal the edge on the counter side, forcing linebackers to flow and then chase back. This is strictly a run play, no play-action or pass option attached, and the primary read is a one cut decision based on how the frontside double team and puller block the alley defender, patience through the mesh point followed by a hard cut off the puller's block.
Pre-snap identify the strong side linebacker depth, if he is sitting tight to the line expect him to crash hard on the puller and get sealed. Watch for safety rotation into the box, an 8 man front with both safeties down can string this play out and blow it up before the puller reaches the alley. Post-snap, key the play side defensive end and see if he sits home reading counter action instead of chasing the initial flow, disciplined ends are the biggest threat to shut this run down. User controlled defenders sitting in the backfield lurking for counter or reading the guard pulls can jump the play immediately, so avoid calling this when the defense has shown a heavy diagnose and crash tendency. Look for overpursuit from the weak side linebacker flowing hard to the initial line movement, that overpursuit is exactly what creates the cutback lane Counter Y is designed to hit.
Run this against base 4-3 and 3-4 fronts with linebackers playing downhill, since counter schemes exploit over aggressive linebacker flow better than pure zone runs. Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance at safety depth to confirm the defense is not stacked into the box with 8 defenders, since Counter Y needs numbers advantage at the point of attack. If the defense shows a heavy blitz look pre-snap, consider hot routing your TE or checking to a quick game pass instead, since Counter Y is vulnerable to fast interior penetration before the pullers get set. Pair this play with Mid Zone and Inside Zone earlier in a series so linebackers start keying zone steps, then dial up Counter Y to punish overflow to the frontside. On third and short or first and ten in normal run downs, this is a great early down call to set up boundary run pass options like RPO Zone Peek Glance later in the series.
