Y Stick out of Shotgun Dbls Flex Y Off Close is a classic Stick concept built around quick, high percentage throws that punish both man and zone coverage. The tight end and slot receiver work stick and flat routes underneath while the outside receivers occupy the corners with vertical or speed out releases, giving the quarterback a full-field horizontal stretch. This is a rhythm timing pass, not a play-action or RPO, and the primary read progression starts with the flat defender: if he sits on the flat route, throw the stick sitting behind him, if he jumps the stick, throw the flat for easy yardage.
Identify the flat defender before the snap, this is your key read for the entire route concept. Watch for a Cover 2 shell with two deep safeties, this play thrives against that look because the underneath zones are stretched thin. If the defense shows Cover 1 or Cover 0 with a slot corner in man coverage, expect the stick route to be the primary answer against a trailing defender. Beware of a nano blitz or a disguised blitz from the slot, since the quick game timing can be disrupted if the flat defender is actually a blitzer. Look for a user-controlled linebacker sitting in a lurk spot over the stick route, this is the main defensive counter and it forces you to check down to the flat immediately.
Use this on early downs or third and short since the sticks concept gets the ball out fast and protects against a negative play.
Check the flat defender pre-snap, if you see a linebacker sitting shallow with no immediate blitz look, plan on hitting the stick route behind him for a chain-moving gain.
Hot route the backside receiver into a slant or drag if you see man coverage across the board, this gives you a built-in man beater against Cover 1 or Cover 0 looks.
Pair this play with Mtn Dagger Y In or Y-sail from the same set to keep defenses honest, since both attack deeper zones after you have shown Y Stick a few times.
Against Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells, look to the stick and flat combo on the side away from the extra defender, since those zones tend to widen the flat and shorten the stick window.
