Zone Fake Jet 1 is a play-action pass out of Shotgun Dbls Flex Y Off Close that opens with jet motion across the formation to freeze linebackers before the quarterback fakes the handoff. The play design uses the jet fake combined with zone play-action blocking to hold the second level, buying time for route combos to develop downfield against both man and zone coverage. Primary read progression starts with the deep shot off the play-action boot or pocket action, then works down to the intermediate crosser, and finally checks down to the underneath option if the top of the coverage takes away the initial reads.
Watch linebacker depth at the snap: if they bite on the jet fake and step up, the intermediate window opens immediately for the crosser or dig Identify single high versus two high safety shells before the snap since single high leaves more room underneath but invites a robber to sit on the crosser Key the flat defender and outside cornerback leverage, if they widen with the jet motion man they leave a soft spot for the play-action route breaking behind them Beware of defenses that stay disciplined and do not bite on the fake, especially Cover 3 sink or Cover 4 match teams that keep their linebackers in zone drops, since this eliminates the window this play depends on Look for user-controlled defenders sitting in a lurk position over the middle, as an aggressive user linebacker can jump the intermediate crosser if the play-action fake does not sell the run threat
Use pre-snap motion with the jet man to bait linebackers into flowing hard toward the fake, then confirm you got the freeze before locking into your first read
Run this out of early down situations like first or second and medium to keep defenses honest against your run game from Inside Zone in the same set
Check the safety shell before the snap: if you see two high safeties sitting deep, work your intermediate crosser since the play-action fake will hold the linebackers just long enough
Pair this call with Read Option and Jet Pass Fk Zone 1 earlier in a series so the defense has to respect both the run action and the quick jet pass, making the fake on Zone Fake Jet 1 hit harder
