Breakdown

Inside Zone out of Shotgun Dbls Flex Y Off Close is a pure zone run play designed to hit between the tackles with a one cutback lane read for the ball carrier. The offensive line steps in unison toward the play side, creating combo blocks at the point of attack while the running back reads the double team on the play side guard and tackle first. The primary read progression is frontside gap to backside cutback, letting the RB press the line and break away from flow if the backside defenders overpursue.

Defensive Reads

Watch for linebacker depth at the snap, if both linebackers are sitting shallow at five yards or less they are likely keying run and will fill gaps fast. Identify safety rotation before the snap, a single high safety look means less width support on cutback lanes, favoring the backside read. Look for a nano blitz alignment with a defensive end crashing down inside, this can blow up the frontside combo block before the RB reads the hole. Check if the defense is in a Bear front or heavy odd stack, these fronts clog interior gaps and force you to rely purely on the cutback lane. Post snap, track user controlled linebackers flowing hard to the play side, since this often opens the backside cutback if the RB presses correctly.

Usage Tips

Check the box count before the snap and only run this into light boxes of six or fewer defenders since the blocking scheme cannot handle extra run support.

Use the flex TE alignment to identify if the defense is showing run blitz or a two high shell, since a stacked front with linebackers creeping up signals a run blitz you want to avoid.

Hot route the flexed TE into a quick out or seal block if you see a Sam linebacker crashing hard off the edge, this gives you an extra blocker to control the edge defender.

Pair this play with Read Option and RPO Zone Peek Glance from the same set so the defense has to respect both the give and the QB run threat, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their run fits.

Best used on early downs, first and second and short to medium yardage, when you want to stay ahead of the chains and set up play-action shots like PA Snag or PA Zone Fk Jet 1 later in the series.
