Mtn HB Out is a motion-based passing concept out of Shotgun Dbls Flex Y Off Close that puts stress on flat defenders and off-corners with a quick-hitting out route from the halfback. The pre-snap motion shifts the defense and can help identify man versus zone before the ball is even snapped, while the rest of the route concept works to hold linebackers and safeties in the middle of the field. The primary read starts with the HB out route as the immediate outlet against man coverage or soft corners, then progresses to the underneath crossers and breaking routes if the flat is taken away.
Watch for a linebacker or slot defender shadowing the HB motion pre-snap, which almost always confirms man coverage and tells you the out route will be open on time. Identify Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with corners sitting outside, since a flat defender sinking into the throwing lane can jump the HB out route for a user pick if you telegraph the throw. Key the underneath linebackers post-snap, since a fast flow to the flat side signals a Cover 3 sink that takes away the primary read and forces the checkdown or crosser progression. Look for blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge to the HB's side, since a nano blitz timed with the motion can beat the protection before the HB even releases into his route. Against zone coverage with deep safeties staying home, this play beats soft corners cushioning off the line but gets shut down when a corner presses aggressively at the snap and disrupts the out route's timing.
Use the pre-snap motion to bait linebackers into showing man coverage, since a defender following the HB across the formation confirms man and tells you the out route will win instantly.
Hot route the backside receiver into a quick slant or drag if you see a Cover 3 shell, since the HB out alone will not beat a sunk cornerback sitting on the flat.
