Spread 4wr is Shotgun's widest empty-adjacent look, putting four receivers on the field with the tight end flexed out as a de facto slot rather than attached to the line. Unlike Shotgun sets that keep a tight end in-line for run support or extra pass protection, Spread 4wr forces the defense to declare its coverage shell pre-snap because there simply are not enough bodies in the box to disguise intent. You get two receivers to each side with the back offset, which means every defensive front decision is visible before you snap.
Use it on third and medium to long when the defense shows nickel or dime, then read the nickel's alignment on your slot to determine man versus zone before the snap.
Motion a receiver across the formation to confirm coverage, then hot route the flexed tight end to a seam or corner depending on whether you see single-high or two-high.
Against heavy blitz users, hot route the back to a flat or block and work the quick slant to your slot rather than holding for deep concepts.
Pair an outside vertical with an inside drag on the same side to create a natural high-low that beats both Cover 3 and man-under coverage.
Save Scene 44-3 and the Gadget looks for short-yardage or a possession where the opponent has started overplaying your primary slot combos.
