Spread Dbl Flex is Shotgun's five-wide-feel 11 personnel set that flexes both the tight end and the back away from the core, giving you four immediate receiving threats plus a checkdown without ever subbing out of 11. The alignment puts two receivers to each side with the flexed bodies splitting the difference between the numbers and the hash, which forces the defense to declare its coverage rotation before the snap. Unlike tighter Shotgun sets that condense splits and keep the back in as a sixth protector, Spread Dbl Flex pulls linebackers and nickel defenders horizontally, thinning the box and creating clean run lanes for Inside Zone, Read Option, HB Sweep, and QB Wrap.
What separates this set from the rest of the Shotgun tree is the sheer volume of Mtn (motion) tagged plays. Mtn Fades H-Choice, Mtn Curls H-Sluggo, Mtn DBL Slants Wheel, Mtn Flood H-Wheel, Mtn Mesh Spot, Mtn Z Cross, and Mtn Whips all build the motion into the play art, so you get a free man/zone read without burning a manual motion and risking a bad snap timing. Combine that with the RPO package (RPO Peek Slant, RPO Zone Peek, RPO Alert Z Screen) and you have a set that answers both single-high pressure and two-high shells from the same look. The 3DRB tag means your back is a legitimate receiving weapon, and the Gadget tag opens up trick looks off the same formation shell.
Personnel-wise, the value comes from isolating your best route runner in the flex slot against a linebacker or a slower nickel. Put a receiving tight end or a big slot in the flexed position and Y Shallow Cross, Slot Out, Z Spot, and Inside Cross become nearly indefensible against man. Against zone, Four Verticals, Deep Curl, PA Dig, and Flanker Dig attack the seams and the intermediate holes that widen when the defense spreads out to match your splits.
Read the flexed slot defender pre-snap: if he walks out and the safety stays deep middle, you are looking at man and Mesh, Inside Cross, or Mtn Fades H-Choice is the call.
On second and medium, live in the RPO package. RPO Peek Slant and RPO Zone Peek let you take the free yards when the box is light and pull the ball when the linebacker crashes.
Against heavy blitz users, set your line to slide protection toward the pressure and hot route the back to a flat or block, then work Slot Out, Quick Slants, or Hitch Corners as your quick game.
Use the Mtn tagged plays early to bank coverage information, then come back to Four Verticals, PA Dig, or Corner Strike off the same look once the defense starts sitting on the underneath.
Mix in HB Slip Screen and Mtn WR Slip Screen after two or three deep drop concepts. Aggressive users overpursue and the flexed alignment gives your screen blockers a head start into space.
