Breakdown

HB Mid Draw out of Shotgun Spread Dbl Flex shows four vertical stems from the outside receivers and slot receivers designed to hold linebackers and safeties deep while the offensive line sells pass protection before opening a lane for the HB up the middle. The four verticals clear out the intermediate zones and second level defenders, giving the running back a delayed handoff read through the A or B gap once the line engages defenders in a pass set look. This is a run play built to punish aggressive pass rushers and zone shells that bail deep off the four vertical release, with the primary read being the initial double team or combo block at the point of attack, then bending the run based on which gap the linebackers vacate.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check linebacker depth, if they are sitting shallow near the line of scrimmage this draw will struggle to develop before contact. Look at safety alignment, two deep safeties or a single high safety bailing hard at the snap signals a zone shell that draw exploits well since the deep defenders drop with the verticals. Post-snap, key the middle linebacker's first step, if he flows toward the vertical routes or bites on a play-action key the draw lane opens immediately. User linebacker crash off the edge or an aggressive user blitz is the biggest counter to this play since it removes the delayed protection window the draw relies on. Man coverage with press corners running with the four verticals downfield tends to leave light boxes, but disciplined defensive tackles that read run through their gap on the mesh point are the best defensive answer to shut this down.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs or in obvious passing situations like 2nd and long to exploit defenses sitting back in zone coverage or blitzing off the edge. Watch for defenders keying the QB drop step, if the linebackers flow hard on pass read, the draw hits big because the interior gaps stay clean longer. Use the four verticals in the diagram to bait Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells into deep drops, this naturally clears the box for the delayed hit. Pair this play with Four Verticals and PA Read from the same set so defenses cannot sit on the draw once they see the vertical stems fire off the line. Avoid calling this against heavy run blitz fronts or defenses showing six plus in the box pre-snap since the delayed mesh point gives extra rushers time to close.
