The offensive line pass sets briefly to sell dropback protection, then engages the defensive front to open a lane through the middle of the formation for the running back. This is a pure run play with no read progression on routes, it is designed to bait aggressive pass rushers and zone drops into overcommitting upfield while the interior line creates a crease for the draw.

Defensive Reads

Identify if the defense is in man coverage with defenders turning their backs to the box, since man corners chasing vertical releases leave linebackers isolated against the draw blocking. Key linebacker depth at the snap, if they drop hard into zone coverage or blitz gaps upfield without honoring the run fake, the draw will hit for explosive yardage. Watch for a spy or a linebacker sitting flat in the middle of the field, this defender is the primary threat to blow up the draw before it develops. Let the play develop and do not panic if the line initially retreats, the delay is intentional and rushing the stick too early kills the blocking angles.
