Since there are no route options drawn for the receivers beyond their release, this is a straight run design meant to attack the edge in space rather than a play-action or RPO look. The primary read is the edge defender or force player: if he crashes down inside, the HB bounces it outside; if he stays wide, the HB cuts up through the alley created by the pulling blocker.

Defensive Reads

Watch linebacker depth and width before the snap. If both linebackers are stacked tight to the box, the sweep has a numbers advantage getting outside before flow arrives. Key the edge defender or SAM linebacker post-snap since he is the primary force player who determines whether the HB bounces or cuts upfield. Man coverage on the perimeter receivers softens outside run support because those defenders are locked onto routes and slower to fill run gaps. Zone shells with safeties rotating down into the box, especially Cover 3 or Cover 1 with a robber, tend to shut this down since extra bodies can fill the alley quickly. User-controlled defenders spying the backfield or crashing hard off the edge should be a red flag pre-snap since a fast diagnosis kills the sweep before it develops.

Usage Tips

Use this play when the defense is showing a light box or when linebackers are aligned tight inside, since the sweep is designed to get outside numbers advantage. Check the alignment of the outside cornerbacks before the snap. If they are playing tight man coverage on the flexed receivers, the edge should be less crowded since those defenders are locked in coverage rather than reading run. Hot route the receivers into quick stalk blocks or keep them on vertical releases to occupy DBs and prevent secondary run support from flowing to the edge. Pair this call with HB Counter and Inside Zone from the same set so the defense cannot sit on outside flow, since counter action off similar personnel will freeze linebackers who key the sweep. Best used on early downs or short yardage to the sideline where getting to the edge quickly punishes overaggressive interior run fits.
