Breakdown

HB Sweep from Shotgun Spread Dbl Flex is a pure run play designed to get the HB outside the tackle box in a hurry. The diagram shows the HB taking a lateral path behind the line before turning upfield, with the offensive line stepping in unison to create a wall for the edge. This is a perimeter run scheme that attacks alley defenders and forces linebackers to flow fast, and it beats teams that sit in light boxes or over-pursue on inside zone tendencies. The primary read is the edge: bounce outside if the flow defender overruns, or cut up through the alley if the edge holds firm.

Defensive Reads

Watch the playside defensive end and outside linebacker at the snap, if they crash inside hard the sweep bounces outside for a big gain. Key the flow of the middle linebacker, quick downhill pursuit to the sweep side means the cutback lane inside is wide open. Identify safety depth pre-snap, a single high safety cheating toward the box signals extra run support and makes the outside lane risky. Man coverage on the perimeter with CBs pressed at the line generally means less immediate flow help, giving the sweep room before defenders can react. This play struggles against user-controlled defenders who spy the HB or against overload blitzes that get penetration before the OL can set the edge, so avoid calling it if the defense has shown edge-crashing tendencies on prior snaps.

Usage Tips

Call this against defenses showing light boxes of six or fewer defenders, especially if the CBs are playing off man or deep zone shells that pull them away from run support. Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance at the strong safety alignment to confirm the defense is not stacking the edge with an extra defender in the box. Pair HB Sweep with Inside Zone and HB Mid Draw from this same set so linebackers cannot key run direction off formation alone. On early downs in 1st and 10 or 2nd and short, this play punishes fast flow defenses that overcommit to inside runs. If you see a nano blitz or edge defender crashing hard down the line pre-snap, consider hot routing the playside WR into a quick screen or bailing to a play-action shot off this same look to keep defenders honest.
