Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, count the box defenders and check if the Mike linebacker is stacked tight to the line, which signals a run blitz that can blow up the wrap lane. Watch for safety rotation toward the boundary before the snap, a late safety walk down often means the defense is selling out to stop designed QB runs. Post-snap, key the play side defensive end and outside linebacker, if they stay disciplined and squeeze the wrap lane, the QB has no crease and should look to bounce. This play is vulnerable to inside blitzes and gap exchange stunts that occupy the pulling blockers, so avoid calling it into heavy A-gap pressure looks. It beats base 4-3 and 3-4 fronts with slow linebacker reads, especially when the defense is in a passing down personnel package that lacks size at the second level.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs or short yardage when you have identified a light box of six or fewer defenders pre-snap.

Motion the flexed receivers or check the leverage of the second level defenders before the snap to confirm the wrap lane is not walked down.

Use the HB as your primary blocking key, if he gets immediate penetration on his kick out, be ready to cut the run back opposite the call side.

Pair this with Read Option and Inside Zone from the same set so defenders cannot sit on one designed QB run look, forcing them to respect both the give and the keep.

Mix in HB Sweep or HB Counter afterward to punish overaggressive linebacker flow once they start keying the QB Wrap action.
