Hitch Corners is a five-man pass concept out of Shotgun Spread Dbl Flex that isolates both boundary corner routes as the primary answers versus off man and single high coverage. The backside receiver runs a deep corner route from outside the numbers while the frontside slot receiver breaks off a corner route as well, with both underneath receivers running quick hitches to give the QB a built-in checkdown against a soft cushion or blitz. The lone in-line receiver on the strong side runs a deep vertical seam to hold the safety and clear space for the corner route working behind him. Primary progression starts with the strong side corner route, works to the backside corner if the safety rotates away, and checks down to either hitch if the corners are capped.

Defensive Reads

Check safety depth and alignment before the snap, a single deep safety in the middle signals Cover 3 or Cover 1 and opens up both corner routes against overmatched corners in trail technique. Two deep safeties with corners playing outside leverage usually means Cover 2 or Cover 4, which squeezes the corner route windows and makes the hitch routes the higher percentage answer. Watch for user controlled defenders sitting in the flat or lurking underneath the corner route, a defender flashing outside late is jumping the route and should be avoided with a hole shot to the opposite corner. Man coverage with no safety help over the top gets exposed by the corner routes since the receiver is breaking away from the defender's momentum, look for tight bump alignment on the outside receivers as a man coverage tell. Zone blitzes that drop a corner into an underneath zone while bringing extra rushers will erase the hitch routes, so identify pressure early and get the ball out to the corner route before the pocket collapses.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion or a hard count to bait the safety and confirm if you are looking at a two high shell or single high before the snap since that dictates which corner route to trust. Against Cover 3 or Cover 1, throw the corner opposite the rotating safety with anticipation before the corner route breaks. If the defense shows soft zone or a heavy underneath cushion, work the hitch routes immediately for a quick, safe completion and live to play the next down. This play pairs well with Four Verticals from the same set since both attack vertical stems, forcing linebackers and safeties to respect the seam before you come back to Hitch Corners on the next snap to hit the same look with quicker timing. Best used on second and medium to third and short where the underneath hitch routes give a high floor while the corners provide explosive play upside if the defense over commits to the flats.
