Breakdown

Inside Cross lines up in Shotgun out of the Spread Dbl Flex set with 11 personnel, showing two receivers stacked tight to the left of the formation and two receivers split wide right. At the snap the inside slot receiver runs a crosser underneath (the red route) while the outside receiver from that same side stems and breaks back across the field on a deep in, creating a natural high low read on the same horizontal plane. The backside receivers run a deep corner and a vertical seam, stretching the defense vertically while the crossers work underneath, making this a man beater that punishes trailing defenders and creates natural rub traffic against man coverage.

Defensive Reads

Man coverage defenders trailing the crossers will get picked off by the natural rub, so look for a lurk defender sitting in the shallow zone to jump the underhand route. Against Cover 3, the deep in route from the outside receiver can sit right in the seam voided by the flowing linebackers, watch for a robber defender crashing down late. Zone blitzes with a spy dropped into the shallow crossing lane will disrupt the underneath option, so key the middle linebacker depth pre-snap to see if he is sitting on the crosser. Deep safety alignment tells you everything: a single high safety leaves the corner route vulnerable, while two deep safeties compress the vertical shots and force you to live underneath. Watch for corner blitzes off the edge since the outside receivers release late on their breaking routes, leaving the QB exposed if protection does not account for the extra rusher.

Usage Tips

Read the crossers first since the underneath route sits down quickly and gives the QB a rhythm throw against man coverage or soft zone drops.

Check the backside cornerback depth pre-snap, if he is playing off man you can climb the ladder to the deep in route for a bigger chunk gain.

Use hot routes to convert the vertical seam into a shorter option against Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells where the safety sits deep and clogs the throwing lane.

This play pairs well with Y Shallow Cross and Mesh in the same set since all three attack underneath crossing patterns, forcing defenders to jump routes and open up double moves later in a series.

Best used on second and medium or third and short since the underneath crosser settles quickly and gives the QB a safe completion window against blitz pressure.
