Y Shallow Cross out of Shotgun Spread Dbl Flex sends the two outside receivers deep, with the left flex WR breaking outside on a corner route and the far right WR running a vertical seam. The Y (TE) executes the namesake shallow crosser, working underneath the entire defense from right to left, while the running back releases on a quick angle route to the flat as a checkdown or blitz-beater. The blocking is a standard shotgun pass protection with no extra help, and this is a zone beater at its core, using the shallow drag to sit in the soft spots vacated by underneath zone defenders. The primary read progression starts with the shallow crosser working left, then bounces to the RB flat route if the crosser is taken away, before working back to the vertical shots on the outside if a blitz or man coverage is detected.
Watch for a linebacker spying the shallow crosser or a defender sitting in the hook zone, since that indicates zone coverage designed to take away the drag route. If the corners are playing off with safeties rotated to two high, expect Cover 2 or Cover 4, which leaves the shallow crosser and RB angle route as your best options underneath. A single high safety look with corners in man alignment signals man coverage, in this case look immediately to the vertical seam or corner route for a big play before the crosser clears the formation. Post snap, track any user controlled defender flying across the field to jump the shallow crosser, since that lurk technique is the primary counter to this concept. Look for blitz packages with extra rushers off the edge, since the quick developing shallow crosser and RB flat route give the quarterback a fast answer against pressure.
Presnap, identify if the defense is showing two high safeties or a single high look, since the shallow crosser thrives against zone shells with soft underneath coverage.
If you see man coverage or a linebacker spying the crosser, be ready to hit the RB angle route to the flat immediately off the snap before the pocket collapses.
Use this play on early downs or third and short to medium, since the shallow cross moves the chains quickly and does not require a deep developing pocket.
Pair this with Four Verticals or PA Slot Post from the same set to keep defenders honest, since both plays start similarly but attack deep once the defense overplays the shallow drag.
Hot route the outside vertical WR into a hitch or quick out if you diagnose a Cover 2 shell, since the deep corner route can get squeezed by a hard flat defender.
