Mtn Flood H-Wheel is a flood concept out of Shotgun Spread Dbl Flex that stacks three levels to the right side of the field while running a dig and drag combo weak. To the flood side, the outside receiver pushes vertical then bends to the corner, the slot runs a flat route, and the H-back releases out of the backfield on a wheel route that climbs up the sideline behind the flat defender. On the backside, one receiver runs a deep crossing route to the far sideline while the other works a shallow drag underneath. This is a classic Cover 3 beater because the wheel and corner attack the deep third while the flat route occupies the underneath defender, and the primary read progression starts with the wheel route matched against the flat or curl defender before working down to the flood flat and backside drag.
Identify single high safety alignment before the snap since Cover 3 leaves the flood side vulnerable to the wheel route stretching the deep third. Watch the flat or curl defender at the snap, if he sinks with the corner route or widens with the flat route the wheel route will be wide open behind him. Key the middle linebacker and any nickel defender assigned to the H-back, if they show blitz or man match late the wheel route beats them on the release. This play struggles against Cover 4 or Cover 2 with strong safety help over the top on the flood side, since a deep half or quarter defender can sink onto the wheel route. Watch for a delayed corner blitz or nano blitz off the edge that the H-back would normally block, since without protection the quarterback loses time to let the wheel route develop.
Use pre-snap motion or alignment checks to confirm if the defense is playing zone or man before the snap since the wheel route is the key to this play against Cover 3 and single high zone shells.
If you see man coverage with a linebacker or slower defender matched on the H-back, throw the wheel immediately for an explosive gain up the sideline.
Hot route the backside drag into a deeper in-cut against teams that sit their linebackers low in zone to give yourself another window versus Cover 2 or Cover 4.
Pair this play with Mtn Fk Swing Wheel or Mtn DBL Slants Wheel in the same set to condition defenders to jump underneath routes, then hit the true wheel route for a big play once they bite.
Best used on second and medium or third and long when defenses are more likely to sit in zone shells, since the flood concept overloads a single side and the wheel exploits any late rotation.
