Breakdown

Slot Outs is a five man route concept out of Shotgun Spread Dbl Flex with 11 personnel that attacks the flats and intermediate zones on both sides of the field. On the left the outside receiver runs a vertical seam while the slot receiver breaks into a quick out at the sticks, giving the QB a horizontal stretch read on that side. On the right the formation mirrors similar spacing with a vertical route from the outside receiver and an out breaking route underneath, while the middle receiver runs a deep comeback style route that works back toward the ball, creating a three level stretch on that side. This is primarily a zone beater that isolates flat defenders and curl to flat droppers, with the quick outs serving as the first read and the verticals acting as clear outs or window shots against soft coverage.

Defensive Reads

Read the flat defenders first, since a hard sink into the flat zone signals Cover 3 or Cover 4 match and the out routes will be tight windows. Key the safeties pre-snap, if both are deep at 10 plus yards it points to a two high zone shell that favors the underneath out routes and the comeback route on the right. Watch for a nickel or slot corner sitting on the out route path, which usually means the defense is playing a pattern match zone that jumps hitches and outs. If linebackers show blitz depth at the snap, expect underneath zones to be vacated, so hit the out route quickly before the pressure arrives. Against man coverage look for the slot defender's hip turn, if he opens outside on the out route break, work the vertical or comeback route as the leverage counter instead.

Usage Tips

Use this on second and medium to long third down situations where defenses are likely to sit in zone shells like Cover 2 or Cover 3.

Pre-snap, identify if the corners are playing off man or bailing into zone, since the out routes need a soft cushion to sit down in front of.

Hot route the backside vertical into a quick slant or drag if you diagnose a hard blitz look, giving the QB a faster underneath answer.

Combine this call with PA Dig or Flanker Dig later in the drive so the play action look mirrors the same route stems and keeps linebackers honest on their zone drops.

Attack the sideline timing throw on the out routes early in the count before curl to flat defenders can widen and undercut the throwing lane.
