Z Spot deploys the classic Spot concept to the right (three man iso to the left) with a hitch/curl outside, a corner route from the inline slot, and an underneath spot route from the flex receiver that settles in the void. To the left, the two flex receivers run a deep out and a drag/crossing route, giving you a two-way go against man leverage. This is a Cover 3 beater by design, using the spot route to sit in the flat zone hole while the corner route stretches the deep third defender vertically, so the primary read progression starts with the spot route underneath, then works to the corner if the flat defender jumps it, and finally to the deep out on the backside as a checkdown against zone drops.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment, since two high safeties with the corners playing off suggests zone drops that the spot concept is designed to exploit. Watch the flat defender at the snap, if he sits and reads the quarterback he can jump the spot route, so be ready to work the corner route immediately behind him. Key the middle linebacker or nickel defender assigned to the underneath zone, since a fast trigger to the spot route area opens the deep out on the backside. Against man coverage, look for a user-controlled defender lurking over the drag or crossing route, as that is the most common way defenses take away this concept. Blitz packages that bring five or six rushers can cause the spot route to be uncovered if the defense does not have a spy, so a hot pre-snap adjustment to protection is worth checking before the snap.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing single high or two high safeties, since the spot concept is built to attack Cover 3 rotation and struggles more against true Cover 4 or Cover 2 with underneath help.
Hot route the backside drag into a deeper crossing route if you diagnose man coverage, turning this into a natural man beater against Cover 1 or Cover 0 pressure looks.
Use this on second and medium or third and short, where the spot route sitting at the sticks gives you a high percentage completion versus zone drops.
Pair this with Four Verticals or Mtn Fades H-Choice from the same set to keep defenses honest, since both punish teams overplaying the short spot concept.
If the user drops a linebacker into the passing lane over the spot route, look immediately to the corner route since that defender is now late getting depth.
