Breakdown

Z Spot is a classic Spot Concept passer out of the Shotgun Spread Dbl Flex set, built as a Cover 3 beater. On the right side the Z runs a quick corner route while the slot receiver (red route) sits down on a hitch to occupy the flat defender, and the TE or slot underneath runs a flat/spot route to settle in the void under the corner. On the left side, the outside receiver runs a deep out breaking away from the formation while the inside receiver runs a drag across the middle, giving the QB a horizontal stretch on that side if the right side is covered. The primary read starts with the spot/flat route underneath, then works to the corner route behind it, using the classic high-low stretch on the flat defender.

Defensive Reads

Look for two-high safety shells pre-snap; if the defense shows Cover 2 or Cover 4, the corner route can get squeezed by the deep half safety so be ready to check down to the spot route immediately. Watch the flat defender (CB or OLB) at the snap; if he sinks under the spot route, the corner route window opens up over the top. Beware of Cover 3 sky or buzz calls where a safety rotates down to rob the spot route, since user-controlled defenders will often sit on this exact throw. Zone blitzes with a nickel or slot corner blitz can jump the drag route on the backside, so keep an eye on second-level pressure crossing the formation before committing to that read. Man coverage with underneath help (Cover 1 robber) is the toughest matchup since the robber defender can jump the spot route sitting in the middle of the field.

Usage Tips

Attack Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells with the corner-flat combo, since the spot route sits right in the throwing lane between the flat defender and the deep third defender.

Pre-snap, check if the corner is playing off man or zone; if the corner squats hard on the flat route, throw the corner route on time before the safety can rotate over.

Hot route the drag route on the backside into a deeper crosser against man coverage teams to create natural rub separation against nickel defenders.

Use this on early down-and-distance (1st or 2nd and medium) to keep play-calling balanced, then pair it with PA Slot Post or PA Dig from the same set to punish defenses sitting on the quick spot concept.

Combine with RPO Peek Slant or RPO Zone Peek as a changeup so linebackers cannot key on run or pass tendencies out of this same personnel look.
