Slot Out out of Shotgun Spread Dbl Flex sends the outside receiver to the left on a deep vertical stem that breaks into a corner route, while the inside receiver on that side runs a shallow drag underneath from right to left across the field. On the right side the slot receiver runs a quick out that breaks toward the sideline, and the outside receiver on that side works a deep dig, sitting down after crossing the middle of the field. This is a man beater built on natural picks and separation angles, with the outside dig, corner, and quick out giving you options against both press man and off man coverage. The primary read progression starts with the boundary corner route, works down to the shallow drag as the underneath option versus man coverage, and finishes with the slot out as the hot route against blitz looks.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the slot cornerback is aligned inside or outside leverage, inside leverage invites the quick out to be open immediately. Watch the deep safety alignment, a single high safety struggles to help over the top on both the corner route and the dig, forcing a tough choice. Post-snap, key the underneath linebackers dropping into the shallow drag lane, if they sink too deep the drag is wide open for an easy pickup. This play struggles against tight zone match coverages where defenders sit on the out breaking routes, since both the quick out and corner route can be jumped by disciplined zone defenders reading the quarterback's eyes. User controlled defenders sitting in the shallow drag lane will bait quarterbacks into a pick six, so account for lurking defenders before checking down to the underneath crosser.

Usage Tips

Check the slot cornerback depth before the snap, if he is playing off you can hit the quick out immediately for a safe conversion on third and short. Use the shallow drag as your answer against man coverage since it crosses the field and creates natural rub separation off the formation traffic. Look to the corner route on the backside when you diagnose single high safety looks, since it attacks the void behind the corner and in front of the safety. Pair this play with Inside Cross or Y Shallow Cross in the same set to keep defenses guessing between drag concepts and out breaking concepts. Attack blitz heavy defenses by getting the ball out quickly on the slot out route, it beats overload pressure by getting outside before extra rushers arrive.
